How to Apply

Procedures for Admission

 

We are pleased that you are interested in applying to University School of Milwaukee. USM is a coeducational school that welcomes qualified students of any race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities at the School. University School complies with all applicable laws regarding access and participation in its programs and facilities for students and persons with disabilities. Please follow the procedures below.

 

Application for Admission and Fee: 

 

An application for admission is required for each student. Applications are accepted throughout the year. A non-refundable fee of $50 for Prekindergarten-grade 12 is due with each child's application form.

(USM parents may offer a Parent Referral Form to a prospective parent; this card waives the $50 application fee. USM Parent Referral Form)

 

Admissions Testing:

  • Prekindergarten (age 3 by September 1st): No testing.

  • Junior Kindergarten-Grade 1: Individual testing by appointment.  

  • Grade 2: Register for the February 6, 2010 or April 24, 2010 testing dates. Individual testing also available by appointment.

  • Grades 3-12: Register for one of the following 8:30 a.m. Saturday testing dates: November 21, 2009 •  February 6, 2010  •  April 24, 2010
  • Individual testing also available by appointment. There is a $15 testing fee. (Testing fee is waived if application fee is paid.)

Student Visits:

  • Prekindergarten: Visit classroom with one or both parents as early as October.
  • Junior and Senior Kindergarten:  Attend a Preprimary Play Group on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.; Friday, February 26, 2010 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.; or Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m.  Parent information session offered.  Registration required.
  • Grades 1-12: Visit a classroom of current grade. (Students in Grade 8 may split the visit between 8th and 9th grade.) Students entering Grade 1 visit 8:15 - 11:15 a.m. Students entering Grades 2-12 visit for a portion of or the whole school day, 8:15 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
  • Parents and students are invited to a school-wide Open House on the following dates from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.: Sunday, October 25, 2009; January 31, 2010; and April 18, 2010. 
  • Families are also invited to attend the MS/US Admissions Preview on Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. or the the Preprimary/LS Admissions Preview on Thursday, February 18, 2010 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.  Registration is required.

Teacher Recommendations:

  • Grades PK*- 5: Teacher recommendations are required. The Admissions Office directly contacts the student's current school.  (*where applicable)
  • Grades 6-12: Two teacher recommendations, Math and English, are required. Applicant must have current Math and English teachers complete recommendation forms and return these forms directly to the USM Admissions Office in a stamped envelope addressed to the USM Admissions Office. If the applicant has the same teacher for English and math, please have an advisor, science, or world language teacher complete the form.

Student Application:

 

Students who are applying for admission to Grades 6-12 must complete the student application form and return it to the Admissions Office.

Grades 9-12

 

Notification of Admission: 

  • Upon completion of the Admissions process, the applicant's file is submitted to the Admissions Committee.
  • Prekindergarten: Notification is on a rolling admissions basis.
  • Junior Kindergarten-Grade 12:  Notification will begin after March 15, dependent upon present grade enrollment.
