1930s

Walter B. Clarkson MCD'38 keeps in touch with classmate Philip Brumder. He attended a memorial meeting in August 2008 in Milwaukee for Richard A. Graham, who died in September 2007, arranged by Graham's wife Nancy. Phil, Dick, and Walt were close friends in the MCD class of 1938.

 

Gordon Lindemann MCD'38, sent in a picture from the battle of Okinawa,

April 1945. The photo was displayed at USM's International Fair on March 10.

 

1940s

Tom Tuttle MCD'45, class secretary, reports that in 2008, on 12/12 at 12:00, 12 of the 17 survivors of the 36 original class members calmly caucused, clearly cohesive and coherent, very viable and verily venerable, languished over a luxurious luncheon, prepared plans for perpetuity, and adjourned promptly at 2:00 for naps. They were: Andy Boyd, Dean Fitzgerald, Peter Friend, Lee Johnson, Art Laskin, Dick Miller, John O'Brien, Don Read, John Sproule, Phil Stone, Dave Tolan, and Tom Tuttle. Greetings were received from the absent five; Gordy Davidson, Dick Foerster, John Furrer, Pete Seidel, and Wally Kieckhefer.

 

John S. Ramaker MCD'46 reports that in April 2008, he visited Jake Hedding MCD'46 in Peoria, Ariz. and Mac Taylor MCD'46 in Sandia Park, N.M. He recently dined at Fox & Hounds with Gutie and Carl John MCD'46 and maintains phone contact with other remaining classmates. Chuck Jordan MCD'46 is now permanently back in Wis. at Egg Harbor.

 

Clark Jung MUS'48 reports: We live in Woodstock, N.Y. We have deer and bears in the backyard and an interesting assortment of artists and musicians roam the streets.

 

Edmund K. Swigart, Ph.D., MCD'49 reports: the most important book I have ever written is now being published. The title is "A White Man's Journey to a Northeastern American Indian Faith and Its Relevance Today". Using the "Old Way" of the oral tradition rather than a normal book form, I as an elder-teacher now, personally share a way of thinking very few people know about, and my life journey to this Ojibway-Onondaga northeastern American Indian faith as it was taught to me by my Native American elders beginning 70 years ago.

 

1950s

Alon P. Winnie, M.D., MCD'50 retired after 20 years as Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at University of Illinois and 10 years as Chair at Cook County Hospital.

 

Mary Warner Blanchard MDS'52 traveled with Jebb Allen Agnew MDS'52 to Italy in June with grandchildren and in the fall to Poland and Russia. We feel we're the same as ever!

 

Robert L. Burch III MUS'52, Dale Jones Burch, and Robert L. Burch IV, the son-in-law, daughter and grandson respectively of Alfred Winslow Jones, the founder of A.W. Jones, represented the firm in commemorating this milestone in hedge fund history. A.W. Jones, the pioneer of the hedge fund concept and the world's first hedge fund, is a private investment partnership implementing an investment program of long/short equity investing. A.W. Jones is now managed by Robert L. Burch III and Robert L. Burch IV.

 

Judith Cron Friedman MDS'53 is chair of People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE) and is thrilled by the advances of solar, wind and geothermal.

 

 

Peter M. Zacher MUS'54 and his wife Judy Zacher departed on a cruise around the world on January 5, 2009. They are visiting 39 ports before returning to Delray Beach in mid-May. This trip was planned in 2007, but postponed while Peter went through the Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer. Now, a year later, he has recovered from surgery and six months of chemotherapy. Hooray and off we go!

 

Barbara Polacheck Blutstein MUS'56 writes: I have a new business "Milwaukee Street Gallery." We sell art from private and corporate collections. We are located at 717 N. Milwaukee Street – great, interesting art.

 

1960s

Mickey Ackerman MCD'63 finds that attending a Celtic's game means more than just good basketball!

 

Donald B. Nadler MCD'64 was elected to the Board of Trustees of Alliant International University. Nadler and his wife, June, welcomed their first grandchildren, Justine and Jaime.

 

Georgianna Schrader Starz'65 is currently owner and CEO of Camp Nicolet, Inc. in Eagle River, Wis. She also just completed her first year of a three-year term as President of the American Camp Association-Wisconsin Section.

 

George W. Fifield'69, founding director of Boston Cyberarts, Inc., was the guest curator of Act/React: Interactive Installation Art at its world premiere at the Milwaukee Art Museum, October 4, 2008 to January 11, 2009. Showcasing a growing body of contemporary art that is visitor-dependent – without the use of specific interfaces like keyboards or touchscreens – this exhibition of motion-driven installation art empowers guests to exercise their creativity and act on their curiosity.

 

1970s

Eric R. Christiansen'72

In December 2008, Christiansen received his M.A. in Theatre Directing from the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University. His thesis was to direct "The Good Person Of Sichuan," by Bertolt Brecht, at Greendale High School in Wisconsin, where he has been teaching theatre for seven years.

 

Robert A. Balge'77 reports: After many years in the broadcast business, he recently joined Trivera Interactive as an account manager. Trivera has been creating web sites, improving search engine placement, and doing email marketing for local, national, and international businesses since 1997.

 

1980s

Karin Elliot'84 has firmly established her independent Russian and German interpreting and translating business, Russian Language Services Maine, in Portland, Maine. She provides in-person and over-the-phone interpreting as well as written translation services to clients in the United States and Russia. Elliot was recently elected to the Executive Board of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA). She is also enrolled in a court interpreter certification training program in the state of Maine. Elliot's eight-year-old daughter, Leeza Kopaeva, is enjoying third grade.

 

Erin Masson Wirth'86 has been selected as a Federal Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration in Richmond, Va.

 

Samantha Becker Crownover'87 is developing new arts entrepreneurship curricula for student artists of the UW-Madison and Greater Madison community along with a colleague at the UW. She is now in her 12th season as executive director of Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society, a Wisconsin-based summer chamber music festival.

 

Stephanie C. Stephens'87 married Bobby Garro Sutton in the Bond Chapel at his alma mater, the University of Chicago, on March 22, 2008. The bride was attended by USM'87 classmates: Samantha Becker Crownover, Susie Easom Mazur, Anne Jennings Grimm, and Elizabeth Emory Gabrys. The "USM family" of the bride included siblings: Allison'81 - Matron of Honor; John W.'83; Matt'84; and parents, Carolyn and John "J.S." Stephens. Wishing them well were USM colleagues John "Jack" Knapp, former Head of Upper School, current Headmaster at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols, Cambridge Mass.; USM Head of Upper School, Roseann Lyons and her husband, Kevin Lyons; Upper School History Department Chair, Stephen J. Bruemmer; and parents of USM alumni, John and Mary Emory. In February 2008, Mary Emory and Elizabeth Emory Gabrys honored Stephanie with a bridal tea at the University Club of Chicago, attended by Pat Laing, wife of the "Laing Tennis Center's" Jim Laing.

 

Tara M. Neavins, M.D.,'89 and Michael Maltese of Newington, Conn., were married on October 18, 2008.

 

1990s

Kathryn C. Klode'93 moved to Boston in September of 2008 to take a recruitment manager role with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. She is pleased to report she is happy and healthy.

 

Scott A. Williams'94 was appointed USM head football coach in February 2009. Williams, who previously served in the roles of Assistant Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Associate Head Coach, is an Upper School history teacher at USM.

 

Kristine Baerlin'95 appeared as a guest on The Martha Stewart Show this January. On the show, she shared tips on making affordable do-it-yourself art and discussed her work as a professional painter and the founder of Brooklyn-based Figment Studio. Wendy Makoons Geniusz'95: Geniusz's book, "Our Knowledge is Not Primitive: Decolonizing Botanical Anishinaabe Teachings", is featured in the Syracuse University Press' spring catalog. In the book, Geniusz contrasts the way in which Anishinaabe botanical knowledge is presented in the academic record with how it is preserved in Anishinaabe culture. Geniusz is director of American Indian studies and assistant professor of foreign languages at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. She teaches courses in traditional American Indian cultures and the Ojibwe language.

 

John U. Olson'95 married Elin Blakstad, a 1995 AFS student, in 2003. Their daughter, Hedda Wahl Olson, was born in February 2008. They are enjoying parenthood and are making their home in Norway.

 

Alison M. Stocking'95 graduated from UW-Madison in 1999 and Yale Law School in 2005. She is clerking on the Second Circuit Federal Court of Appeals in New York.

 

Nathaniel B. White'95 took part in the U.S. Speed Skating National Long Track Age Class Championships and is now the National Champion in the 30-39 age group.

 

Douglas A. Christiansen'96 reports that he is currently living in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he is the Director of Hockey Operations for the Edinburgh Capitals. The Capitals play at the highest level of professional hockey in the United Kingdom. This is his second season with the organization and last year the team had the best record in franchise history. This year they are on pace to eclipse last year's success and hopefully have a long play-off run.

Joseph O. Gendelman'97 married Ilana Blitzer on November 8, 2008. The couple lives in New York, and Gendelman is the president of Bruce Gendelman Insurance Services.

 

Alice L. Finke'99 received a Master's of Science degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in May 2008. She then presented her master's thesis at an international architectural heritage conservation seminar at Fontevraud Abbey in Val de Loire,

France. She now works as an architectural designer for Klein & Hoffman, Inc.

 

Alison P. Keen'99 is a student at Tufts University Veterinary School. She recently accepted the position of Program Assistant for the summer (2009) Adventures in Veterinary Medicine offered by Tufts University.

 

Elizabeth Gallagher'99 married Chris Petree on November 15, 2008, in Boca Grande, Fla. In addition to her mother, Ann Larson Gallagher'66, and her sister, Catherine Gallagher'02, other USM alumni in attendance were: Geoff Aster'95, Nick Aster'92, Barbara Cota Bartholin'69, Mary Mackie Borges MUS'56, Kathy Jacobs Housiaux'68, Rob Kieckhefer'67, Julie Winkler Petri'71, Judy Cutler Rauh'72, Jane Wanvig Rauh MDS'63, Katie Robbins Ruidl'99, Renee Johnson Tyson'70, Julie Aring Uihlein'68, David Uihlein'67, Justin Uihlein'99, Peter Uihlein'67, Tim Uihlein'99. The couple is currently living in Bloomington, Ind.

 

2000s

Colleston A. Morgan'03 is teaching in New Orleans as part of Teach for America.

 

Emily Chier Harrington'04 graduated from Colorado College in May 2008, with a degree in Environmental Science. She is presently pursuing her Master's in Education at Colorado College. Harrington also has a paid internship teaching seventh and eighth grade science at Woodland Park Middle School in Woodland Park, Colo. She was inducted into the Educational Honors Society, Kappa Delta Pi, in 2008. She will graduate in July 2009.

 

Danielle A. Anderson'06 was on the Dean's list in the spring of 2008 at Washington University in St. Louis.
