Grade five through grade eight
The Miraculous Middle Years
Middle School is a time of tremendous growth, when minds and bodies are changing at remarkable speed. Our teachers fully recognize these changes and the need to offer students a balanced, challenging program focused on academics, the arts, and physical education.
Further development and refinement of basic skills is our prime academic goal throughout the four years of Middle School. Grade-level teams design integrated units that help students understand the common themes that cross over departments. Music, art, and drama offer outlets for students to explore their own creativity. Sports, clubs, and service activities provide platforms for developing talents and leadership practice. Middle School students learn to handle a growing academic and extracurricular schedule and to prepare for the rigors of high school by mastering time management and organizational skills.
And, at a time of life when friendships and social interaction are of paramount importance, University School supports the development of interpersonal skills. We value and honor diverse backgrounds and provide many opportunities for young people to get to know, appreciate, and work with each other.
Philosophy
University School offers students a challenging and diverse academic program that acknowledges the developmental needs of young people during their Middle School years. The curriculum is constantly reviewed to ensure that knowledge and skills spiral as students move through Middle School.
We provide a balance of academics, fine arts, and physical education. Students take courses in nine different fields of study each year. Core courses consist of English, mathematics, science, social studies, and a foreign language. Courses in art, music, drama, computer instruction, and physical education are also part of the Middle School experience each year. |
